Did you know there are foods you can eat to lose weight and “kill fat” at the same time? Here is a list of foods you should incorporate into your diet if your goal is to lose weight and lose body fat:
1. Whole Eggs, Including the Yolk! Eggs are the source of some of the highest quality protein, but many don’t know that the yolk is the part that contains most of the vital nutrients. The advice to eat egg whites stems from an outdated understanding of nutrition that the yolk contains cholesterol, and as a result, should be avoided. The truth: eating egg yolks does NOT raise your cholesterol. The yolk contains calcium, zinc. folate, B6, B12, iron, Vitamins A, D, E, and K. All of the essentially fatty acids are also in the yolk. These nutrients are almost completely absent in egg whites.
So go ahead and eat those eggs, yolk and all. Just make sure to buy organic, free-range eggs to get the best nutrient concentration, the proper ratio of fats, and to avoid any dangerous chemicals.
2. Beef! Yes Beef! However, we are not talking about the meat you find at your typical supermarket that comes from animals raised on grains. We are talking about organic, grass-fed beef and bison. How does this help you to lose weight? Humans were meant to consume fats in the ratio of 4 parts Omega-6 Fats to 1 Part Omega-3. Our Standard American Diet (abbreviated SAD) promotes a ratio of more like 20:1. Omega-6 fats come from grain, so guess what happens when you raise livestock on corn, soy, and other grains they were not intended to eat? That’s right, they contain way more Omega-6 fats, which promotes inflammation in the body. Also, grass fed beef contains a special healthy fat called conjugated linoleic Acid (CLA) which has been shown to promote fat loss. Grass fed meats are harder to find, but a quick search on the Internet should turn up some good sources for you.
3. Avocados: Avocados are one of these wonderful foods. 20 years ago, in the “no fat craze”, we were told to avoid avocados because they had too much fat. Turns out, the do, but the fat is a high-quality monounsaturated fat which is good for you. Not only that, they contain a ton of vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, and antioxidants, as well as a decent amount of fiber. Use avocados to make guacamole (YUM!), add sliced avocado to sandwiches, as a side to any meal, and use in one of my favorite ways, in scrambled eggs or omelets with a little salsa. Heaven!
4. Nuts: Walnuts, Pecans, Macadamias, Almonds, and others are another food that is high in fat and was previously thought to be bad for you because they were too high in fat. Turns out, there are good fats and bad fats, and nuts and seeds contain tons of good, healthy fats while providing a high level of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, protein, and fiber. Studies show consuming a small handful of nuts as a snack in between meals promotes a sense of fullness and helps you lose weight and body fat! Try to eat a variety of nuts and seeds 20 to 30 minutes before meals. The best ones to buy are the raw nuts, because roasting them does lower the nutritional content of the nuts. A side note: avoid peanuts, which are not actually a nut. Look in stores such as Whole Foods for nut butters like almond butter, pecan butter, etc. And lastly unsalted pistachios are also very healthy nuts.
5. Berries are one of nature’s true superfoods. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries are packed with antioxidants and vitamins as well as minerals. They also contain a lot of fiber, which helps to slow your rate of carbohydrate absorption and slows down the rate of digestion, which promotes a more consistent blood sugar level. This helps to prevent your body from releasing too much insulin, which promotes deposition of body fat. Add berries to yogurt, cottager cheese, oatmeal, salads, and watch the results! They are also a terrific snack. And, why not mix 2 fat killing foods: berries and nuts for a delicious, healthy snack!
Include these foods in your diet, and watch the pounds and fat start to melt away!
